Program notes:“Dances with Fire” begins with a fast-paced, multi-meter groove which evokes an image similar to that of a tribe dancing in a circle around a large bonfire. Towards the middle of the piece, this fiery dance slowly cools down into a calmer, more elegant waltz. But ultimately, the fire’s energy cannot be contained, and the original fire dance returns even stronger!Composed May 2025

Program notes:"Fantasy for Bassoon and Piano" paints a dream-like setting through chromatic melodies and dissonant, yet lush harmonies. The melody heard in the slower, ballad-like middle section is one of my favorites, partly due to the recurring 2-3 upward suspension motif, and also because of the battling tonal centers of D-flat Major and the distantly related E Major.Composed April 2025

Program notes:"Clarinet Groove" is an upbeat, groovy piece featuring most of the clarinet family, allowing for dense harmony across the full clarinet range. The overall groove of the piece draws inspiration from the sounds of the early 2000s popular soundtrack "Animusic", with which the composer grew familiar during his childhood.Composed November 2022

Electronic Backing Track
Estimated duration:5 minutes, 50 seconds
Program notes:"AlphaSet" is an electronically-accompanied clarinet piece built entirely upon a singular group of four notes (or set) which is called the "alpha set". It is categorized with the numbers (0, 3, 4, 7), which create a triad with both a major and a minor third when played together. Although dissonant, the sound it creates is eerily beautiful. The electronic backing track draws techniques from my early roots creating synthetic "boss battle" music.Composed March 2024

Program notes:"Signs of the Times" is a challenging, yet rewarding piece that is structured on several asymmetrical time signatures. In fact, the title has a double meaning: it is a play on the musical term "time signature", but is also a reference to Christ's Second Coming. The piece depicts the prophesied natural disasters and their somber aftermath. But then comes the climax, when Jesus descends from the heavens, heard through fast runs in the upper woodwinds, and is the only part of the piece in a simple time signature, demonstrating stability and surety.Composed October 2022

Any of these instruments may be substituted with a similar instrument of your choice if you desire a different overall color.Composed July 2023

Program notes:Thalassophobia (from Ancient Greek θάλασσα [thálassa] 'sea' and φόβος [phóbos] 'fear') is the persistent and intense fear of deep bodies of water, such as the ocean, seas, or lakes.Throughout the piece, a chromatic descent motif representing “drowning” can be heard, most notably at the end where this motif sinks down to the ensemble’s lowest pitches. A recurring rhythmic ostinato found in the faster middle section is Morse Code for the letters: S E A.Composed September 2025

Program notes:"Cinco Miniaturas" contains five short movements, or miniatures, for clarinet septet. Each miniature portrays a different emotion: “Afligido” (afflicted), “Angustia” (anguish), “Animado” (lively), “Aislado” (isolated), and “Agitado” (agitated). Two main themes are introduced in the first movement, and are heard throughout the entire piece. Each miniature harmonically transitions to the next through relative, parallel, or similar tonal centers.Composed March 2019

Program notes:When deliberating with my fellow clarinetists as to what type of piece I should write for our clarinet studio, the two descriptors that we decided on were “jazzy” and “spooky”. Appropriately, I originally decided to call this piece “Jazpook”. I’ve since matured. “Haunted Cabaret” features a repeating eerie bassline, whilst new layers add on as the piece continues. As you reach the halfway point, the piece takes a turn, gaining in speed and adding a little swing to match the old-timey feeling of a possessed jazz bar.Composed March 2022

Program notes:This arrangement of "We Three Kings" was originally created by my brother and I for an eclectic ensemble of eight instruments for a church event. But upon discovering the unique and diverse sounds of the reed quintet, I knew I needed to rearrange it for this ensemble, adding a few extra sections to the arrangement to better cater to the reed quintet's strengths.Arranged December 2022

Born and raised in Southern California, I grew up in a large and loud family where I first developed a love for music. I grew up playing the piano, clarinet, guitar, and upright bass in my schools’ ensembles, and led as drum major for three years in my high school’s marching band.I studied music composition at Brigham Young University-Idaho under Dr. Sue Neimoyer, and served as President of the BYU-I Student Composers Society. I also studied the clarinet with Dr. Adam Ballif, which inspired a love for composing for the clarinet and other similar wind-instruments.Upon graduating, I joined the BYU-I team as an adjunct professor, where I now teach music theory and composition courses as well as private composition lessons. I have been happily married to my dear wife, Camryn, since December 2023.Writing music brings me joy and purpose, and I love hearing what my listeners' think of it, so please reach out and let me know!
